How we picked

  • Each tool is a product analytics tool with funnels or event reports.
  • Each vendor has a public pricing or docs page that states what is on each plan.
  • Mobile coverage is claimed only where that page states it.
  • Free tiers are compared in the unit the vendor bills in. Events and sessions are not the same unit.
  • There are no ratings or scores. The tools were read from vendor pages, not tested.

The order follows the job each tool suits. ActivationPal is last because it covers mobile onboarding, paywall and subscription funnels only, and its publisher owns this page.

1. Amplitude

Best for: analytics, session replay, experimentation and guides on one platform.

Amplitude's free plan includes 2M events a month, no credit card, with Session Replay for web and mobile. The limits are in experimentation and cohorts. A/B/n testing and experiment results in feature experimentation are Growth and Enterprise only, and behavioral cohorts are not on Free and capped at 20 on Plus.

2. Mixpanel

Best for: funnels and retention on named events.

Mixpanel has a free plan with up to 1M events a month, unlimited seats, funnels, retention and flows reports, mobile analytics and 10K session replays a month. Its page lists a Flutter SDK for Android, iOS and macOS. The free plan allows 5 saved reports per seat and up to 10 active feature flags.

3. PostHog

Best for: teams that want analytics, replay and feature flags on one usage-based bill.

PostHog gives every month 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings and 1M feature flag requests free, with a billing limit per product above that. It also has an MIT-licensed open source product. On the free plan, events past the limit are dropped, and events are kept for 1 year.

4. Heap

Best for: automatic capture without naming every event, billed by sessions.

Heap lists autocapture, and its free plan covers up to 10k monthly sessions with 6 months of data history. A mobile session ends after 5 minutes of inactivity. Over the limit Heap does not drop data but asks you to upgrade before you can view it again. Session Replay is an add-on on Pro and Premier.

5. Firebase (Google Analytics)

Best for: no-cost app measurement for apps already on Firebase.

Firebase offers Google Analytics at no charge, with unlimited reporting on up to 500 distinct events you define through the SDK. It covers iOS, Android, Web, Flutter, Unity and C++, and links to BigQuery for custom analysis. The 500-event cap is the main limit. See its pricing page.

6. ActivationPal

Best for: iOS and Android apps that need onboarding, paywall and subscription conversion reports.

  • Event names are fixed, so there is nothing to register and no charts to build.
  • The onboarding funnel has one row per step, with answer splits.
  • Paywall placements and plans are reported separately.
  • Install-cohort funnels count unique devices at every stage, and no stage exceeds 100% of installs.
  • RevenueCat (HMAC-signed webhook) or Superwall (Svix-signed webhook) revenue joins the funnel through the user id.
  • SDKs: native Swift (single file, iOS 15+), native Android (one Kotlin file, Android 5.0+), Flutter, and React Native or Expo.

Setup is a handful of static calls from the quickstart:

ActivationPal.configure(app: "myapp", key: "ap_pk_YOUR_KEY", userId: Purchases.shared.appUserID)
ActivationPal.onboardingStep(0, id: "goal", answer: "lose_weight")
ActivationPal.onboardingCompleted()
ActivationPal.paywallShown("onboarding")
ActivationPal.paywallPurchased("yearly")

Guides cover Android, Flutter and React Native, plus the RevenueCat and Superwall webhooks. The homepage shows the dashboard, and subscription analytics and iOS analytics cover the two sides in detail.

The first 10k events are free in total with 3-month history. Starter is $9 a month for 50k events, Pro $19 for 250k and Scale $29 for 1M, each with 2-year history. Apps and members are unlimited. Past the allowance analytics locks while events keep recording. See pricing.

Limits: mobile apps only, with no web analytics, no experimentation and no session replay. Data is stored in the United States with no region selector, and no DPA is offered (privacy and security).

How to choose by job

  • A free plan counted in events, with replay and experimentation in one tool: Amplitude, which includes 2M events a month.
  • Funnels and retention on explicitly named events: Mixpanel, at 1M events a month.
  • Several products on one bill, or an open source option: PostHog, with billing limits per product.
  • Capture without naming events up front: Heap, billed by sessions.
  • No-cost reporting for an app already on Firebase: Firebase (Google Analytics).
  • Mobile onboarding, paywall and RevenueCat or Superwall purchase reporting: ActivationPal. It does not replace a web or cross-platform suite.

Two head-to-head reads: Heap vs Amplitude and Heap vs Mixpanel. If you are weighing a custom dashboard, see build vs buy analytics, and size your funnel numbers with the funnel calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free product analytics tool?

It depends on the unit. Amplitude's free plan is 2M events a month, Mixpanel's is 1M events, PostHog's is 1M events plus 5K recordings and 1M flag requests, and Firebase Analytics is no-cost with a 500-event cap. Heap's is 10k sessions. Events and sessions differ, so the numbers are not directly comparable.

Which product analytics tool is best for mobile apps?

Each page states different mobile coverage. Amplitude lists Session Replay for web and mobile, Mixpanel lists mobile analytics and a Flutter SDK, and Firebase lists iOS, Android, Flutter, Unity and C++. ActivationPal covers mobile onboarding and purchase funnels. Confirm Heap and PostHog mobile SDKs with the vendor.

What is the difference between autocapture and explicit event tracking?

Autocapture records interactions without code, and you label the events later in the tool, as Heap lists it. Explicit tracking means you name each event in code. ActivationPal sits between them: the SDK sends fixed event names, so nothing needs to be registered.

Can ActivationPal replace a general product analytics tool?

For onboarding, paywall and subscription funnels in iOS or Android apps, yes. It has no web analytics, experimentation or session replay, so it does not replace a general suite for those jobs. See pricing for the plans.
