Onboarding completion rate: formula

Onboarding completion rate = unique new installs that completed onboarding ÷ unique new installs × 100. For completion among people who started, divide unique starters who completed onboarding by unique starters and label it a starter-based rate.

Choose the denominator

Use all new installs when you want to know what share finished onboarding, including installs that never started it. Use starters when you want to measure completion among people who entered the flow, and label the result as a starter completion rate.

Measure the funnel in ActivationPal

ActivationPal’s onboarding funnel analytics uses first_open to define the install cohort and counts unique devices that reach each stage. The SDK sends first_open once per install; onboarding_completed marks the end of onboarding. Divide devices at the completed stage by devices at the installed stage for the install-based rate.

Add onboardingStep calls for the stages you want to track and call onboardingCompleted() when onboarding ends. The event reference lists the fixed event names, and the quickstart shows SDK setup.

Set a consistent completion window

Recent installs have had less time to finish than older ones. When comparing cohorts, give each the same amount of time after first_open to complete onboarding.

Frequently asked questions

Can completed devices exceed installs in the funnel?

No. Each stage counts unique devices from the same first_open install cohort, so completed devices cannot exceed installs.

What counts as an onboarding starter?

Choose a tracked event that marks entry into onboarding and count the unique devices that trigger it. ActivationPal's onboarding_step event can mark progress through the flow.

Which apps can use ActivationPal onboarding analytics?

ActivationPal supports native Swift, native Android, Flutter, and React Native/Expo apps.
