ActivationPal

Mobile analytics comparison for app teams

Compare mobile analytics tools on four things: native SDKs for your platforms, funnel reports, subscription events and cost in the vendor's own unit. ActivationPal publishes this page and makes the first product listed. There are no affiliate links.

Requirement checklist for mobile analytics tools

Check each line on the vendor's own pages before you shortlist a tool.

  • A native SDK for every platform you ship, not only the one you build first.
  • Whether you name every event yourself or the tool uses fixed names.
  • An onboarding funnel with one row per step.
  • A paywall view to purchase funnel, split by placement and plan.
  • Trial start, trial conversion, renewal and churn events from your purchase provider.
  • A user id that joins app events to purchase events.
  • The free tier in the unit the vendor bills: events, sessions or distinct event names.
  • Data region and a data processing addendum, if your contracts need them.
  • Self-service export of your raw data.
  • Web or backend events, if you need them in the same tool.

Events per month = active users × events per user per month. Convert that into each vendor's unit before comparing free tiers.

Which mobile analytics tool fits which app team

Subscription app on RevenueCat or Superwall that needs onboarding and paywall funnels. ActivationPal reports both funnels with fixed event names and joins purchases by user id.

App already on Firebase that wants no-cost measurement. Firebase reports on up to 500 distinct events at no charge.

Team that wants named events with funnels and retention. Mixpanel lists funnels, retention and flows reports and a free plan of 1M events a month.

Team that wants analytics, replay and experimentation on one platform. Amplitude includes Session Replay for web and mobile on every plan.

Team that wants several products on one usage-based bill, or an open source option. PostHog sets a billing limit per product and has an MIT-licensed open source product.

Team that needs a region other than the United States, a DPA or self-service export. Do not pick ActivationPal: it has no region selector, offers no DPA and handles exports by email to support, as the privacy and security docs state. Check the other vendors' own pages for these.

ActivationPal: funnels from onboarding to revenue

ActivationPal uses fixed event names, so there is nothing to register and no charts to build. Setup, from the quickstart:

  1. Add the app in the dashboard to get its slug and ap_pk key, then add the SDK.
  2. Call ActivationPal.configure(app:key:userId:) at launch. It sends first_open and app_open automatically. With RevenueCat, pass Purchases.shared.appUserID as the user id.
  3. Call onboardingStep on each onboarding screen, then onboardingCompleted.
  4. Call paywallShown, paywallPlanSelected, paywallPurchased and paywallDismissed around the paywall.
  5. Connect the RevenueCat or Superwall webhook.
ActivationPal.configure(app: "myapp", key: "ap_pk_YOUR_KEY", userId: Purchases.shared.appUserID)

ActivationPal.onboardingStep(0, id: "goal", answer: "lose_weight")
ActivationPal.onboardingStep(1, id: "notifications")
ActivationPal.onboardingCompleted()

ActivationPal.paywallShown("onboarding")
ActivationPal.paywallPlanSelected("yearly")
ActivationPal.paywallPurchased("yearly")

A trial start is rc_initial_purchase with period_type TRIAL, and a trial conversion is rc_renewal with is_trial_conversion. The same event names work on Android, Flutter and React Native. iOS analytics covers the Swift SDK, subscription analytics covers the revenue side, React Native analytics covers Expo, and the homepage shows the dashboard.

Limits: mobile apps only, with no web analytics, experimentation or session replay. Data is stored in the United States with no region selector, and no DPA is offered. See privacy and security.

Other mobile app analytics tools

Mixpanel

Mixpanel suits teams that want named events with funnels, retention and flows reports. The free plan has up to 1M events a month, unlimited seats, 10K session replays a month, 5 saved reports per seat and up to 10 active feature flags. Stay on it if your team already builds its reports there.

Amplitude

Amplitude puts analytics, Session Replay and experimentation on one platform, with 2M events a month free and no credit card. Session Replay covers web and mobile on every plan. Behavioral cohorts are not on Free and are capped at 20 on Plus, which needs a credit card and scales to 70M events.

PostHog

PostHog gives every month 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings and 1M feature flag requests free, with a billing limit per product. On the free plan, events past the limit are dropped and events are kept for 1 year. It also has an MIT-licensed open source product. The pricing page does not state mobile SDKs or funnel reports, so check its docs.

Firebase (Google Analytics)

Firebase offers Google Analytics at no charge, with unlimited reporting on up to 500 distinct events you define through the SDK. It links to BigQuery for custom analysis and integrates with Crashlytics, FCM and Remote Config. Stay on it if the app is already on Firebase and general measurement is enough.

Mobile analytics cost compared

  • ActivationPal: 10k events in total free with 3-month history. Starter is $9 a month for 50k events, Pro $19 for 250k and Scale $29 for 1M, each with 2-year history. Apps and members are unlimited. Past the allowance analytics locks while events keep recording. See pricing.
  • Mixpanel: free up to 1M events a month. Growth starts at $0 with the first 1M events free, up to 20M events a month. Enterprise is a quote.
  • Amplitude: free at 2M events a month. Plus starts at $0 with the first 2M events free and scales to 70M events. Growth and Enterprise are custom.
  • PostHog: 1M analytics events, 5K recordings and 1M flag requests free each month, then pay as you go with a billing limit per product.
  • Firebase: Google Analytics at no charge, with reporting on up to 500 distinct events.

The units differ: events, distinct event names and product usage. Convert your own volume first, and size your funnel with the funnel calculator.

How to choose

  • ActivationPal when onboarding, paywall and subscription conversion are the reports you need.
  • Firebase when you want to measure at no charge inside an existing Firebase setup.
  • Mixpanel when your team thinks in named events, funnels and retention.
  • Amplitude when replay and experimentation should sit next to analytics.
  • PostHog when one bill across products or an open source option matters.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best mobile app analytics tools?

It depends on the job. ActivationPal fits mobile onboarding, paywall and subscription funnels. Mixpanel and Amplitude fit general product analytics, PostHog fits a usage-based bill across products, and Firebase fits no-cost measurement. The matrix above shows what each vendor page states.

Which mobile analytics tools are free?

All five have a free option, in different units. ActivationPal gives 10k events in total, Mixpanel 1M events a month, Amplitude 2M events a month, and PostHog 1M events plus 5K recordings and 1M flag requests a month. Firebase is no-cost with a cap of 500 distinct events.

Can mobile analytics tools track RevenueCat or Superwall subscription events?

ActivationPal documents both a RevenueCat and a Superwall webhook. RevenueCat's integrations page lists Amplitude, Mixpanel, PostHog and Firebase as destinations for its subscription events. The sources used here state no Superwall connection for the other four.

What should a mobile analytics comparison check first?

Start with an SDK for every platform you ship, then the funnel steps you need and the user id that joins app events to purchases. Last, compare free tiers in the vendor's own unit, using your events per month.
